"casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you" I Peter 5:7

Dragging our Chains behind us

Dragging burdens
As a heavy chain;
Too stubborn to
Ask for help again.
Embarrassed to
Lay them at His feet;
Too proud to admit defeat.
Though the chain is more than we can bear
We haven't learned to cast our care
Upon the One who
Cares for us.
We lack the faith;
We lack the trust.

Engorged with burdens,
Python-like,
That chain is wound
About so tight;
At last, we cry;
He hears our plea!
And instantly, we're free.

"...for truth is fallen in the street..." Isaiah 59:14

Truth is Fallen

Truth is fallen in the streets
And the crowds just pass him by.
Will no one stop to bind his wounds?
Does no one hear him cry?

People glance, but look right through him;
They deny that he exists.
"Truth is relative"--and they're no kin
Of this rigid dogmatist.

"For even if he is real,
We have no more use for him.
We each can make our own truth now
And shift the paradigm."

But, look--someone stops to pick him up
And helps him to his feet.
The masses throw their stones and hiss,
"Just leave him in the street!"

"Truth is fallen! Truth is fallen!"
They shout with wild glee;
But the day of judgment looms
And only Truth could set them free....

"Oh, send out thy light and thy truth:
let them lead me;" Psalms 43:3

"And ye shall know the truth,
and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32

I prefer to learn my lessons the easy way whenever possible. I know better than to pray for things like patience, for instance! And yet, it seems that often God uses difficult times--trials and troubles, sorrows and suffering--to draw us closer to Him and to purify us. Look at any of the great men and women of faith in the Bible--Can you think of any that had an "easy life" with no testing? (Joseph, Daniel, Ruth, Esther, Hannah, Moses, David, Abraham, Paul, etc. etc.) And so I suppose that it is with us as well....

His Jewels

We don't begin as diamonds
But as lumpy chunks of coal.
Pressed and heated beyond measure
We are but halfway toward our goal.

As rough, unpolished gems,
We face the lapidary's wheel:
Abraded, cut on every side;
We've lost too much, we feel!

We were carefree chunks of graphite:
Soft and smudgy, black as sin.
He saw us as gleaming diamonds:
Sparkling white without, within.

We may not like His methods;
We may disdain His tools;
But that is how all lumps of coal
Become His treasured jewels.

malachi 3:17, james 1:2,3

"Be sober, be vigilant;
because your adversary the devil,
as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" I Peter 5:8

I Know Why the Caged Lion Roars

The lion roars and shakes his mane,
Threatening to devour you whole.
This beast is ravenous as the grave
And he's after your very soul!

But for you, he is caged;
Though he paces and roars
He can't really harm you--
Just stay away from those doors!

Though he purrs oh, so sweetly
Don't get close to that cat!
He's a lion--no kitten--
And he'd eat you like...that!

You're no match for that beast;
Just a morsel to chew.
...But he trembles and quakes
at that Lamb next to you!

After we pass the midpoint of the average lifespan, each encroaching birthday seems like a "Post-it Note" of our own mortality. But if you are alive and kicking, there is still time to make each day count for Christ. Start now.

Or the Golden Bowl be Broken

We think ourselves rocks
(and more like granite than schist)
But we're vapors--mere shadows--
And we vanish as mist.

Time sifts through our fingers;
Too soon, we grow old.
Our years turn like pages,
As a tale that is told.

Looking glasses bemuse us;
We conclude they must lie.
(For that wrinkled reflection
is much older than I!)

We have sharp disagreements
With this entity "Time":
We would like a "pause" button,
Or perhaps a "rewind".

But Time presses forward
And it drags us along;
We cannot reclaim
All those years that are gone.

Yet...we do have today,
While that silver cord's tight;
Come on, vapors and shadows--
Let's work while there's light!

Ecclesiastes 12
Psalms 39:4 and 90:9-12
James 4:14

Keep those cleaning supplies handy!

Clean heart;
right spirit.
neglect..
Dust and cobwebs.
cleaning time again:
dust rags, furniture polish
a long-handled mop for the high corners.
Clean heart;
right spirit.
neglect--again!
soap and water and...blood.
stain remover and scouring pads--ouch!
don't ever give up on me, Lord!
(and keep those cleaning supplies handy)

...will I ever learn daily maintenance?
(sigh)
it's called sanctification.......

Psalm 51

Thine eyes shall see the King in His Beauty

(based on Psalms 96)

Don't enter His courts empty-handed;
Bring an offering, Give to the Lord:
A sacrifice pleasing,
a savor sweet-smelling,
A spirit contrite,
a heart that is broken,
A garment of worship and praise.

Tell of His glory, show forth His salvation;
Worship and kneel at His feet.
Sing a new song to our King and Creator
For Satan's demise is complete!

Honor and majesty, beauty and strength--
Give Him the glory due unto His name.
Let the heavens rejoice and
The whole earth be glad
For He cometh--to judge and to reign!

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
Sing praise--for He cometh to reign!

To Them that Perish

(Acts 17; I Corinthians 1:18)

What will this babbler say?
Come, let's go listen;
He speaks of Creation,
a Curse, and a Cross.
He tells of one God
who urges repentance;
That all without Christ will be lost.

Resurrection and judgment--
To many, just
foolishness
But some would hear more,
Some believed
and were saved.
But those who were hardened,
Blind and deaf
to the Truth,
Simply mocked and went on their way.
...And so it continues today.

 A Tale of Two Trees

(Genesis 3; I Corinthians 15)

Eden--Golgotha
The first and last Adam.
The sin debt incurred,
The sin debt is paid.

A Promise is given,
The Promise is kept.
From the foundation,
The Lamb had been slain.

Enter--the sting of death
See--death is swallowed up
For the One who knew no sin
Became sin for us.

When He arose,
The price was accepted.
We, too, will be raised;
Resurrected from dust.

Eden--Golgotha
The first and last Adam;
If there was no real first tree
Try explaining the last.

Someday that curse
Which sprang forth from Eden
Will be relegated
To the long distant past.

Kicked out of Eden,
at the Cross, there is room
It's the tale of two trees--
And a vacated tomb.

Stubbornly clinging to Christ

(Josh. 23:8, Deut. 4:4, Acts 11:23)

As a limpet or barnacle,
I will cling to my Rock.
Neither high tide nor
Storms will wash me off Him.

As ivy, I'll cling to my
Tower of strength
I will cling as that last oak leaf
Clings to its limb.

As a babe to his blanket
I will not cast aside
The Source of my Comfort,
the strength of my life.

Battle-weary, confused;
I feel so weak, so hollow.
Even now I must trust
And continue to follow.

For where else can I go?
Christ alone sets me free.
And I know He will never
--Not Once!--
let go of me!

The Spirit's Whisper

Just a whisper
of peace
To a heart filled
with anguish
Like a breeze
gently rustling
The tall aspen's leaves.

Not a thing
to be grasped,
Yet you can
feel His power
And the strength
to go on
Through that whisper of peace.

Despising Small Things

(Zech. 4:10, II Kings 5:13)

Bid me do some great thing, Lord;
Just ask--I'm your man!
I'm willing to serve in
A way that is grand.

I'll quit my job,
leave my friends,
I'd even move far away.
Then a quiet voice prods,
"And what if I bid you stay?

"Prove yourself in the small things;
things humble and low.
"Here's a dark little corner
and one talent--
now, Glow!"

"Or do you despise the
small tasks I assign--
the everyday opportunities
to let your light shine?"'

....Bid me do any thing, Lord;
Just ask--I'm your man!
I'll willing to serve
Any way that I can:
Backstage or in limelight;
In the grind or the grand!

Jail-break!

"For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars in sunder" Psalms 107:16

March out of your prison
for the bars have been broken;
The keeper subdued
by one Word that was spoken.

No longer a captive,
A prisoner no more,
You've been loosed from your bands
And you walk out the door.

Feel the breeze of the Spirit,
Smell the fragrance of freedom!
Change your foul prison garb
For a robe of white linen.

Then--glance back at those souls
Who are still bound by sin
By His power and grace,
Bring the Good News to them!

Prone to Preen, Needs Pruning!

(John 15)

Take a little off the top, Lord
Then I should be just fine.
But I sense this is no haircut
As those shears approach the vine!

Ouch! I don't care for those pruning shears;
A haircut doesn't hurt!
I'll be sore all over by the time
He's finished with this work.

I thought a little trim would do;
I'd just produce a grape or two.
The way He's cutting, shears in hand
It's apparent this Gardener has other plans!

He'll do the work; each cut, precise.
(excising some branches I thought quite nice!)
But He knows what He's doing--
He expects a full crop;
And that can't be achieved
with  a trim off the top!
