“Selling the Idea that Cancer is Preventable”

You and Your Group are Responsible for Viewing and Reading the Entire Page and All Necessary Links

It’s the year 2032 and many areas of science have produced cures and created advanced techniques to battle the long time disease, cancer.   Now, in the future, your company has been selected by the World Health Organization, “W.H.O.” to promote, advertise, and sell cancer curing preventatives, instruments, and procedures in order to inform a dying civilization about cancer.

It was… never really meant to be; although for years scientist and medical professions had always warned us about it for as long as anyone could remember.  But despite the constant warnings, cancer became too common throughout the world.  Radiation, chemicals, and even virus infections began to pay a toll on human civilization. Ignorance breeds ignorance and if nothing is done to inform the world of the dangers of cancer and promote treatments…. then we as a species may cease to exist.

In order to inform the public in a clear and concise manner, “WHO”, has broken down cancer into four main types, "carcinoma", "sarcoma", "leukemia", and “lymphoma”. “WHO” feels that these cancers are apprehensive enough to be made more aware of to the general public and are willing to give your company an undisclosed amount of money to create a world wide commercial.

This assignment is about a group of highly intelligent, young, and imaginative people on their quest to save their planet and perhaps even themselves from a world plagued by tumors, malignant cells, and disease by creating the ultimate…..

The Task

You and your team are to create a commercial that addresses four main types of cancer.

You are also to present a portfolio about all aspects of the commercial including all required research, a list of references, and scripts. (other items may in incorporated if the group feels it necessary (i.e. materials lists, ideas, sketches, etc…)

Once, you have all the necessary research and ideas finalized create a video the not just tries to sell instruments and techniques; but also informs the public about caner prevention.

You must also follow the webquest “story-line”.  Do not vary from the Introduction and/or task.

The commercial may be created in any fashion the team deems appropriate.  For example, you may have a commercial for each the four main types of cancers or one commercial to address them all.  You may also use any of the various formats you see on TV such as infomercials, public service commercials, and/or dramatization commercials, etc…

The Process

1. The commercial must consist of the following actors:

A Specialist: is responsible for medical, biological, and chemical information about the product being sold, about the human body and cancer in general.

An Annalist: is responsible for any information and support being sold about the emotional and concerning effects cancer has on humans.

A Technician: is responsible for any electronic and/or mechanic devices that are being sold by the team.

A Subject: is responsible for complying with the products claims by helping to demonstrate any procedures, ideas, and/or instruments used.

Other: if the group deems it necessary to have another member title in the commercial. (must clear with teacher first)

2. Each group will receive a briefing on cancer prior to the commercial planning stage.  During, after, and/or before the commercial is to air, the group is required to learn and gather facts about the four main types of cancers and use the information in the commercial.

Members are to take the research and apply it to each character’s role as best as possible. Even though you may be the “Specialist”, feel free to find information on counseling and/or medical instruments.  Be sure to agree and learn as a group about all the information so each has some idea about the topic(s).

Five to Ten (or more) facts (i.e. definitions, treatments, preventatives, support, instruments, etc…) are required for each actor in order to give him/her information to say during video and/or develop their character.

It may help to find some major cellular differences between healthy cells and cancerous ones such as: shape, nutrient requirements, communication, locations, cause and effects, and/or treatments.

Feel free to use other resources related to the online information such as related links on pages that you initially go to your specific topic.

NO resources are to be used in the presentation in the form texts, software, videos or any other non-online material.  These may be used as supplementary materials only to help understand the online information and/or this webquest.

Full references of your research are required (see “Resources” below)

3. From the information gathered, develop the Cancer Commercial(s) by following the listed guidelines: (DUE on the given date)

Portfolio: All information, research, script, references, sketches, and/or any other items that pertained to your commercial must be turned in as a folder.

A script is required to go along with the commercial and is to be turned in with the portfolio.  The script must “basically” be “word for word”.

If necessary, type or write any items that should be overlooked or ignored within the video.  These items will then not be held against you and/or your group.  You may also include any concerns or problems that need to be addressed prior to grading. Place this information one a separate sheet of paper in your portfolio.

Video: Project should be well managed and rehearsed, educational yet creative, and properly videoed in the areas of grammar, technology, professionalism, and censorship:

A total of 10-15 minutes for the entire commercial video is required.  Remember that quality is more important than quantity.

Manipulatives need to used in the commercial such as props, illustrations, animations, drawings, etc...

You may use “stand-in’s” (other people) with your commercial.

Each member of the team needs to have about equal time on the video.  Having a separate person (not on the team) to run and/or direct the video is high suggested.

Safety is to be highly stressed (i.e. no fire, no explosions, no weapons (i.e. firearms, paintball, etc…), and/or nothing that may potentially harm a person are to be used).

Have title before and credits after the commercial.

The Conclusion

During this scientific exploration in advertisement share what you will learn with each other; it’s an essential part of the learning experience.  It will be fine to have some disagreements and debates, just remember to be flexible and willing to do your part. Try to put as much effort into the project as you can, be imaginative, ask questions, and participate to the fullest of your ability. In the science of biology, these are issues that face scientist and people every day……
