Nutricia , A Survivor
You are about to meet my friend whom I'll call Nutricia. We go back a long way. Too often we can only talk on the phone. And yes, she is indeed real, for those of you who have written to ask. I would never make up anything about violence.
Due to popular demand, Nutricia said I could tell something about the time her second husband tried to kill her. In self-defense class we were taught that you can fight back after you have been injured. The instructor said women are usually so amazed that someone actually harmed them, that they don't fight back. Nutricia, Superwoman
Well, Nutricia was sound asleep when her unpleasant spouse decided to do away with her. Yes, of course alcohol played a big role in his so-called thinking processes.
As Nutricia slept, here he came, miraculously upright for once, into the darkened bedroom. He poured a kettle of boiling water on Nutricia.
In spite of the pain, Nutricia struggled out of the sheets and ran into the living room. There, he attacked her with a knife. Nutricia struggled with him, as her daughter, age 13, beat on his hand until she got the knife out of it. Her son, age 9, rang up 911.
This isn't television folks. 911 hung up on him. They did phone back to the house. As Nutricia struggled, she wondered who in the world was phoning at a time like this. Eventually a police car drove to the house.
Her husband punched N. in the mouth after he lost control of the knife. She wrestled the soused spouse the the ground and sat on his back. The police finally arrived but *****sat in the driveway***** a long time trying to decide what to do. This one won't show up on the telly.
Lo, one of the officers was the husband's former stepson. There was no love lost between him and the "alleged perp," and he was the one to take Nutricia to the hospital, where she stayed *****a long time***** in the burn unit. Her folks were able to care for the children. Meanwhile, some of her husband's children went into the house and took everything Nutricia owned, and sold it. Sure, they kept all the money for themselves.
The judge did absolutely nothing to the husband, saying "he was just liquored up. Didn't mean anything by it." The police officer-stepson tried to get the charge of attempted murder entered but was unsuccessful. Wonder if the judge still sits in power? Odds are he does.
Grim story, right? She is a heck of a fighter, right? Read on.
The rest of the story:
Nutricia, finally out of the hospital, files for divorce and despite the apparently addled judiciary of her state, receives it.Husband passes out one night. He is living alone. His children come to see him, find him on the floor, make him crawl onto the couch and leave, thinking he has just passed out as usual, from the booze and the Xanax addiction. Husband dies of a stroke a few hours later.
Husband had tried to change his insurance beneficiary. His employers told him that his beneficiary was irrevocable, and that they would fight in court for Nutricia. Nutricia uses the money for nursing school. Nutricia is an R.N. now. The daughter just graduated from college with honors, and got married. The son is out of high school by now. Nutricia is a hero for our times.
There is a moving editorial by Don Hunt about abuse of women. He states that we lost 58,000 troops in Viet Nam while in the US in the same time period, 51,000 women were murdered, mostly by men who "loved them." Take some time to read the editorial if you can. Thanks.

My cousin Trish worked at a shelter for battered women. One of the other workers was Lisa, whose husband was in jail for violence against her. One day the jail gave her husband a day pass. No one told Lisa. His mother drove him and his shotgun to northern Indiana where he stalked and killed Lisa. There is almost nothing one can say about anything this outrageous. But it is our duty to remember. It is our duty to work for laws that will prevent this senselessness. It is our obligation how we raise our children to protest.
There is a wonderful organization in Canada to raise awareness of violence against women. Visit the website; use the logo-link. Get involved.

The whole Wellesley community on GeoCities seems to be women helping women. I think it is a new section of Geocities.
